Helping your written work look its best from cover to cover!

A Little About Me

I have always been a word nerd. I love playing word games and reading in my spare time. I have an eye for detail and excellent grammar and spelling skills that serve me well in my career. I've worked in the legal field for more than seventeen years as a legal administrative assistant, so proofreading is something I do on a daily basis. My experience includes the fields of family law, labor (employment) law, and personal injury law.

I'm a Silver Member of The Christian PEN, and I've completed the Proofreading 101, Freelance Editing 101, and Substantive Editing for Fiction 101 courses to help me on my editing journey. I've also completed General Proofreading: Theory and Practice and Janet Shaughnessy's Legal Transcription: Theory and Practice courses to further hone my proofreading and transcription skills.

Everyone who produces content for an audience should utilize a transcriptionist, a copyeditor, or a proofreader. Are you an author? Blogger? Court reporter? Web content creator? Podcaster? Marketing manager? Scriptwriter? Business owner or entrepreneur? If so, you need one of my services!

Let me put my skills to work for you!

People Say . . .

“Jeanna is an excellent proofreader and provides careful, efficient work. She’s quick with house style and preferences, raises questions that should be asked, and bears in mind far more of the manuscript than just the sentence-by-sentence details. I’m always confident about a manuscript I’ve sent to Cover to Cover Services.”

FAQ

Do I need a proofreader or a copyeditor?

Proofreaders are the final eyes looking at a project before publication. They do not rewrite. They are looking for glaring mistakes that were missed during edits. Some of the errors proofreaders look for include the following:

  • spelling

  • punctuation

  • grammar (including subject/verb agreement, pronouns and their antecedents, comma splices, sentence fragments and run-ons, and misplaced modifiers)

  • repeated or missing words

  • correct word usage (e.g., your/you're, its/it's, affect/effect)

  • formatting (extra line breaks and spaces)

  • typos

Copyeditors look for all of the above errors and also take a detailed look at the structure and clarity of sentences. Copyeditors:

  • provide basic fact checking

  • look for consistency in the timeline, character details, etc.

  • fix or flag confusing phrases

  • rewrite and reorganize, but not on a large scale

What methods do you use to annotate documents?

I prefer using Microsoft Word, but I can also annotate PDF documents.

What reference materials do you use when you proofread?

For legal transcripts, I use Morson's English Guide for Court Reporters and Court Reporting: Bad Grammar/Good Punctuation.

For general proofreading projects, I use The Chicago Manual of Style Online; The Christian Writer's Manual of Style: 4th Edition; Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary; and The Best Punctuation Book, Period. Of course, if you have your own style sheet or style guide, I will follow your preferences.

Why should I hire you?

No matter how strong your grammar skills are, you always need someone else to be your second set of eyes. I have a keen eye for detail, years of experience typing, proofreading, and editing documents, and I help clients produce quality finished products!
